FAQ

Where is your office located?

I’m located in the Hudson Valley of NY (I’m a Brooklyn transplant). I’m licensed to see patients anywhere in New York State and Florida. I typically see people remotely through a combination of video and phone sessions.

Does remote therapy work?

Yes. People still do the work, gain insights, have therapeutic relationships, etc. It’s just easier to park.

What are your hours?

I have mostly daytime hours Tuesday through Friday and a few evening spots available.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes, more or less.

Do you take insurance?

I am on the following Plans in New York and Florida: Aetna, Carelon Behavioral Health, Cigna, Oscar, Oxford, Quest, United, and UMR. I’m on Fidelis-Essential and Fidelis-Ambetter in NY only.

If I’m out-of-network, can you provide a superbill so my insurance provider can reimburse me?

Yes, I can. You would pay for sessions directly with Zelle, Venmo, or PayPal. I will send a statement at the end of the month. Please check with your insurance provider to see what they will reimburse you.

What are your rates?

Individual therapy is $195, and Group therapy is $50.

How do I set up an initial appointment?

Please send me an email at amikaplan2@gmail.com or call at (917) 837-9230 to get the process started.

What if I want to talk to you first?

No problem, you can schedule a 15-minute phone call here.

How do I pay my co-pay or bill?

For most insurance payments, I help you get set up with my biller, ‘Headway.’ You enter your card info there once, and it happens automatically. For private-pay people, I’ll email you a statement at the end of the month, and you can pay with Zelle, Venmo, or PayPal (PayPal charges a fee).

What is your cancellation policy?

You must cancel 48 hours in advance. Otherwise, I will bill you for the whole fee (not just the co-pay) if you did not cancel within this timeframe.

What is your professional training and experience?

I have a BS from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and an MSW from New York University. Additionally, I hold a Post-Graduate Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center (PPSC) in New York City.

Some of my additional training includes Focusing Oriented Relational Psychotherapy (FORP).

Currently, I’m an LCSW Licensed in New York (since 1995) and Florida (2025).

What age ranges do you work with?

I work with adults, 18 and older.

Do you work with women? Men? Couples?

I work with individuals of all genders and sexualities (LGBTQ folks are welcome), and I run an every-other-week group for Adult Children of Narcissistic Parents.

Do your clients receive assignments to work on between sessions?

I occasionally give people ‘homework,’ if it works for you, I can provide more of this.

What modalities do you use in your work with clients?

I use Psychodynamics, Psychoanalytic, Ego Psychology, and Focusing (bodily felt sensations).

How do I get the most out of working with you?

Show up, be curious, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or give me feedback. When thoughts and feelings bubble up between sessions, write them down.

Do I have to talk about my dreams?

Dreams are quite valuable for therapy; they are little stories in symbols that you wrote, and an indicator of what you’re working on internally. But you don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to.

How do I know when I’m done with therapy?

When you feel an urge to go on your own, or when you hear me say, “I think you’re cooked.”
